The History of the North Wales Medical Trust

The charity was originally formed in 1978 to establish the North Wales Medical Centre, a private hospital in Llandudno, which was at the forefront of the development of private health care in the United Kingdom.  In 1985, the campus of the North Wales Medical Centre was expanded to include a Sheltered Housing Development; again, an innovative initiative.  In 1987, the Board of Governors sold the North Wales Medical Centre and established the North Wales Medical Trust.

Achievements of the North Wales Medical Trust

Since 1987, the North Wales Medical Trust has been proactive in a number of initiatives:

  • From 1992 to 2001 we provided administrative and financial support services to CAIS, Cyngor Alcohol Information Service.
  • In 1996, we helped to established Cyfleoedd (Opportunities), which was set up with Welsh Office funding to provide a specialist day service for people with learning disabilities in the community.
  • We were involved in the establishment of the North Wales Resources Centre for Disabled People at Glan Clwyd Hospital.
  • In 1997, for a period of fifteen months, we acted as Co-ordinators to the North Wales Drug and Alcohol Forum, one of five such bodies set up in Wales by the Welsh Office. During our tenure, we organised the First Annual Conference of the North Wales Drug and Alcohol Forum at which the guest speakers were the then Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales, Sir Win Griffiths, M.P., the U.K. Anti-Drug Co-ordinator, Mr. Keith Hellawell, and Professor Carlo di Clemente, Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology, Maryland University, Baltimore, together with several presentations by members of the six Local Action Teams in North Wales.
  • Since the inception of the Trust, we have worked in partnership with two Hospices to establish and develop hospice care in North Wales, and to facilitate in-patient treatment for ex-service personnel suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
  • We continue to assist a number of Welsh medical societies, and local branches of the British Diabetic Association and the Ysbyty Gwynedd Epilepsy Support Group.
  • We have assisted a group of local medical practitioners from North Wales to visit Nepal to set up trauma management programmes tailored to local needs and facilities.
  • We provided administrative support to the North Wales Faculty of The Royal College of General Practitioners based in Tyldesley House.
  • We administered the Welsh Hospital Recognition Committee (WHRC) under the auspices of the Welsh Council of the Royal College of General Practitioners from 2000 to 2006.  The WHRC enabled hospital posts within Wales to be assessed for general practice training by Welsh General Practitioners. The WHRC's  functions were subsumed to the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board in 2006
